This delivers even more fine toning within the gorgeously enriched color palette, and even more controlled dynamism with the image’s dramatically expanded light range. While the Saving Private Ryan 4K transfer looks fantastic in its standard HDR10 presentation, it looks even better if you can take advantage of its Dolby Vision transfer. This means that those extremes always feel connected to/natural extensions of the milder content in between. Even the most extreme dark or light shots look natural - not least because the HDR work opens up the whole image, rather than just pushing its extremes. The gruesomeness of what heavy war machines can do to human bodies also looks even more visceral thanks to the 4K Blu-ray’s color and light enhancements than it does on the previous HD Blu-ray release.Ĭrucially, though, the color and dynamic range regrade doesn’t make the image feel artificial at any point. They have a much more authentic rusty metallic tone. The ‘Czech Hedgehogs’ on the Normandy beaches, for instance, no longer look grey or a monotone brown. You also see subtleties of color I’ve never seen before on any of the film’s home format releases. Photo: Saving Private Ryan, Paramount Pictures, Dreamworks The film’s extensive exterior sequences become phenomenally life-like thanks to HDR's extra light intensity and range, and you get an even greater appreciation for the strikingly stark, often deliberately muted color palette the film uses to such memorable effect. The high dynamic range and color regrading of Saving Private Ryan is every bit as brilliantly but thoughtfully handled as the 4K detail capture. On the contrary, with one or two exceptions - such as, oddly, the scene where Miller’s group first speak to Ryan on the bridge - the grain adds to the cinematic feel of this exceptionally sensitively remastered catalog release. However, this grain is hardly ever distracting in its intensity. Inevitably with a 35mm scan that doesn’t (thankfully) appear to have been subjected to any obvious noise reduction processing, the hugely impressive 4K detail is accompanied by a little grain. The scan does a wondrous job of picking out out all that lovely granular detail that exists in ‘analogue’ film prints, creating the landscapes and battlegrounds of France with a sense of depth and naturalism not seen since the film first toured cinemas.Įven more importantly, the detail in the ‘band of brothers’ faces and army gear brings them even more intensely into your living room - or, more accurately, it puts you even more intensely into the horrific world the soldiers are trying to fight through.

The results, though, redefine what I’d thought this analog-to-digital approach could achieve.įor starters, detail levels are frequently outstanding. Then there’s the incredible difference that HDR and Dolby Vision make to the picture, delivering more lifelike images than standard DVD and Blu-ray. As the resolution for cinemas is usually 2K, many movies come to 4K Ultra HD in that format – however, they are still improved markedly over standard Blu-ray by upscaling in both mastering and via your 4K player. But all 4K discs aren’t created equal – you could basically say that there’s “real” and “fake” 4K.
